Jenerous is partnering with Fairtrade and ethical organisations in India, where founder, Jenny Allan first visited in 2007. Our products are made by suppliers that are actively involved in social change activities and the workers and artisans involved in the production of Jenerous products, are paid fairly and have good, safe working conditions.

Our business activities aim to empower and bring freedom to the individuals and communities we are working with, and we hope to over time increase the number of people offered training and employment.

Jacobswell in Bangalore, India

The majority of our products are made in a small factory in Southern India called Jacobswell, which until recently was a registered and certified WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). The factory is transforming the lives of India’s urban poor through sustainable employment and personal development. They train and employ vulnerable young people from low socio-economic backgrounds, who often have few employment or training opportunities.

Many of the employees have worked at the factory for a long time due to the positive environment and the good working conditions. There is no child or forced labour and the workers have a safe and clean place to work, as well as a sustainable income that is above the minimum wage. The workers also receive benefits such as; medical insurance for themselves and their families, a pension equivalent, holiday and sick leave, breaks in the day, and are paid for optional over-time.

In recent developments (August 2024), Jacobswell have decided not to renew their WFTO membership due to the financial implications, and are therefore no longer a registered WFTO member. The products on our website were all made whilst they were a member. Their business structure and commitment to empowering and safe work, continue to be unchanged, and this decision reflects the challenges that are facing small businesses across the globe.

Mila Fair Clothing in Tirupur, India

Our Lenzing Modal jersey dresses have been made by Mila Fair Clothing a Fairtrade factory in Tirupur, India. They are manufacturing clothing ethically in a safe and good working environment. Workers have access to personal safety equipment, medical needs via Employees State Insurance, retirement & pension funds and workers are paid a living wage, which is far above the minimum wage. Employees also receive holidays and time off.

Mila Fair uses eco-friendly and sustainable production processes - ensuring everyone involved in their making, i.e. farmers, workers, etc. gets a fair price for their produce and having respect for the environment. They are committed to creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers and following the Fair Trade principles including no gender inequality, child or forced labour.

Purnaa in Kathmandu, Nepal

Our organic cotton infinity scarves have been made by Purnaa, a Fair Trade factory in Nepal and a World Fair Trade Organization Guaranteed Member.

Purnaa manufactures ethically-made and environmentally-sustainable garments, accessories, and other fabric-based items. As a social enterprise, Purnaa believes that business has the potential to transform society and has a social mission to empower those marginalized by society to fresh starts and fulfilled lives. They gauge their success by the lives they impact and their profits are reinvested to further the social mission of creating training and job opportunities.

At Purnaa, staff receive fair wages, technical skills training, life-skills training (budgeting, relationships, literacy, numeracy, health & nutrition), access to counselling, healthcare, and employer-matched savings, all in a positive work environment. All Purnaa employees are eligible for school scholarships for their children. In this way, they empower the next generation.

Ethical employment is not just about fair wages. Purnaa has a work environment free of discrimination, where people are treated fairly and equally regardless of gender, race, religion or caste. Tharangini in Bangalore, India

Our prints are hand block printed by artisans in India, preserving and celebrating this ancient craft. Tharangini is based in Bangalore, India and was established in 1977, and is home to a number of expert block print artisans.

Tharangini is a women-led and inclusive business paying fair wages. They also provide their staff with private medical insurance, pandemic support, paid leave and annual bonus. Tharangini run community outreach programs and are environmentally focused, sourcing locally and using natural and organic dyes. They also have ISO 26000 certification.

Auromira Exports in Puducherry, India

Auromira Exports seeks to promote Fair Trade in India. They are members of the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation) and follow the 10 principles of Fair Trade, including paying a fair price to the artisans, no child labour or women exploitation, individual development and community improvement schemes, environmentally friendly production methods and respect for the local culture and traditions of the artisans.

The principle goal of Auromira Exports is to improve the lives of the less privileged rural youth in the surrounding villages of Puducherry, by helping them to become self-reliant artisans.

The products that we make with Auromira Exports utilise their stock fabrics. We use what already exists to make beautiful Fair Trade clothing.
